CÁRDENAS RECOGNIZES 5TH ANNIVERSARY OF AFFORDABLE HEALTH CARE

(San Fernando Valley, Calif.) -- Today, U.S. Rep. Tony Cárdenas (D-San Fernando Valley), a member of the U.S. House Subcommittee on Health (Energy and Commerce), welcomed the fifth anniversary of the Affordable Care Act becoming law.

“Today, because of the hard work of President Obama and Democrats in Congress, more than 16 million Americans have access to high quality, affordable health insurance,” said Cárdenas. “Included among those are the hundreds of San Fernando Valley families who have attended my health care workshops, who have signed up. Their children are covered through age 26, they can’t be dropped from insurance when they get sick, and they can go to bed each night without the fear of a cold or injury wiping out their family finances.

“I am proud to defend the Affordable Care Act, and to help implement it in Los Angeles. If I had been here in 2010, I would have been even more proud to vote for it. The Affordable Care Act is the biggest change to American health care in the past 70 years. It is bringing down costs, covering more Americans and making dozens of other crucial changes to how our nation views health care.”

In California, more than 1.4 million consumers enrolled in quality, affordable health insurance coverage through Covered California as of Feb. 22.  Nationwide, nearly 11.7 million consumers selected a plan or were automatically enrolled in Marketplace coverage this year.
