Cárdenas Announces Candidacy for DCCC Chair

WASHINGTON, DC– Today, Congressman Tony Cárdenas (CA-29)  declared his candidacy for Chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) and withdrew from the race for Assistant Speaker. Cárdenas announced his decision in a letter to the Democratic caucus.

“If I am elected as the next Chairman of the DCCC, I will fight to maintain our Democratic majority so that we accomplish our priorities for the people,” said Congressman Cárdenas. “I understand the enormous responsibility ahead, but I have a proven record of overcoming challenges and working hard to support Democrats. It would be my honor to work with Speaker Pelosi and my Democratic colleagues to ensure we maintain and expand our majority in Congress.”

November 9, 2020

Dear Colleague:

I write to you today to ask for your support for my candidacy to be the next Chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) and to inform you that I am withdrawing my name from consideration for Assistant Speaker.

I am asking for you to trust me to take on the critical role of ensuring that the strength of our Democratic Caucus continues. This Election Day had many success stories: President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris reaching the coveted 270 electoral votes needed to clinch victory, record voter participation nationwide, Black and Brown communities showing up at the polls in states like Arizona, Michigan, Nevada, Georgia, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania, and a winning Democratic coalition that was diverse and inclusive of a broad spectrum of political ideologies. However, the night was not without some immense disappointments and I feel an unshakeable sense of loss and frustration for all our colleagues that will not be returning in the new Congress.

The upcoming midterm elections will not be easy and I won’t sugarcoat the truth – it will be a hell of a fight – but families in all corners of America are counting on us to win again in two years and I refuse to let them or this Caucus down. This fight will be an enormous responsibility I humbly embrace because I am confident that I have the experience, commitment, and passion needed to lead us successfully over the finish line.

As Chair of the DCCC, I will look to you, my colleagues, to help inform the organization’s strategy. I value collaboration and the strengths you all possess, and I understand that no one knows how to win in your districts like you do.

Chairwoman Bustos has worked tirelessly to help protect our majority. In order to forge ahead, we will need someone with a track record of running successful political organizations to take the helm on day one because we do not have a moment to spare. My tenure as Chairman of CHC BOLD PAC and successful fundraising record have given me the experience needed to help secure another two years of a Democratic Congress.

Experience Growing a Political Operation

For the past six years, I have served as Chairman of the campaign arm of the Hispanic Caucus, CHC BOLD PAC, and we have achieved unprecedented results. We surpassed every fundraising goal and transformed the organization into the political powerhouse that it is today. In three election cycles, we increased the number of Hispanic Members of Congress from 25 to nearly 40, and raised more than $32 million to elect Democrats, not only within the CHC but also within the Democratic Caucus at large. I am proud of our achievements and, because of our organizational success, we have shared our resources beyond the CHC to endorse and contribute to more than 150 non-Hispanic incumbents and candidates during my tenure. As Chairman, I made it a priority for BOLD PAC to work with the DCCC, Democratic organizations, and campaign committees fighting to flip battleground seats across the country. We helped win elections for Progressives, New Dems, Blue Dogs, CBC, CAPAC, CHC, Women’s Caucus, and the LGBTQ+ Equality Caucus. We invested early and heavily, working strategically to ensure that our resources were spent where it would do the most good. I will bring that same commitment and collaborative spirit to the DCCC.

The Future of DCCC: Accessibility, Visibility and Innovation

My philosophy for running the DCCC will be accessibility, visibility and innovation.  The DCCC is your organization and I want to make sure it provides an open door for you and your staff.

  • Creating Value for All Members: I will create a robust member services operation for all Members so that you have access to the unique tools that you and your team need.

  • Talent From All Corners of America: I will build a diverse team that reflects our country and the Democratic Party. I will also look to you for leadership within the organization to spearhead initiatives and to be public voices of the DCCC.

  • Success Through Innovation:   We are the party of innovation. I believe we can be on the cutting edge by opening the door to innovative new talents and diverse vendors.  The digital space is changing at a rapid pace and we need to stay ahead of the curve by expanding grassroots donor programs, organizing key constituencies that have historically not been the focus of our outreach, and supercharging our mobilization and GOTV efforts with the data available to us.

If I am elected as the next Chairman of the DCCC, I will fight to maintain our Democratic majority so that we can accomplish our priorities for the people. I understand the enormous responsibility ahead, and I have a proven record of overcoming challenges and working hard to support Democrats. I ask for your support so that I can continue to work hard every day and ensure we maintain and expand our majority in Congress.
