CÁRDENAS TO FORCE VOTE ON COMPREHENSIVE IMMIGRATION REFORM TOMORROW
(Washington, DC) – Today, U.S. Rep. Tony Cárdenas (D-San Fernando Valley), a member of the House Committee on the Budget, released a statement regarding the Republican Budget plan released yesterday by Committee Chairman Paul Ryan.
“My goal as a Congressman is to protect the America I love, one that guarantees an equal opportunity to succeed, protects those who have fallen by the wayside and encourages growth for our families and children,” said Cárdenas. “This budget falls far short of that goal. This budget cripples our commitment to seniors, to middle class families, to kids in our schools and to the job creators who we depend on to build this nation. It also ignores the massive effect that comprehensive immigration reform could have on our economy.”
Tomorrow, at a hearing to amend the Republican Budget plan, Cárdenas will offer an amendment creating the economic infrastructure to support H.R. 15, the House version of Comprehensive Immigration Reform. The bill, which has bipartisan support, would lower the deficit by more than $900 billion, while creating an additional 120,000 jobs each year.
“Republican leadership has refused every attempt to bring this commonsense legislation to a fair debate and a majority-rules vote,” said Cárdenas. “This may be the only chance we have to vote on reform that will impact millions of families, while supercharging our economic future.
“Make no mistake, this will be a vote on comprehensive immigration reform and I intend to hold every member of the Budget Committee accountable for that vote. I hope my fellow members and their constituents will do the same.”
