Cárdenas Independence Day Statement

WASHINGTON, DCCongressman Tony Cárdenas (CA-29) releases the following statement:

“‘We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.’

“Those are the words enshrined in our Declaration of Independence. 253 years later, those words ring true today as it did then. These inspiring words of hope serve as a reminder that our pursuit of equality, justice, and liberty is a never-ending fight.

“As we celebrate Independence Day, let us reflect on the sacrifices of those who came before in the struggle for freedom and liberty and not forget those who gave the ultimate sacrifice in service to their country – in what Lincoln called 'the last full measure of devotion'. Let us also remember the brave men and women of the Armed Forces who serve our nation at home and abroad.

“But most of all, as we rejoice in the company of family and friends, let us never forget that this republic’s strength is a united people. Because in the end – regardless of the color of our skin, who we love, how we pray, or where we come from – there is more that unites us than divides us.

“‘E pluribus unum’: out of many, one.”
