Cárdenas: Sessions returning to Dumb-On-Crime Policies

Today, U.S. Representative Tony Cárdenas released the following statement regarding Attorney General Sessions’ criminal charging directive.

"The Attorney General’s actions today clearly demonstrate this Administration’s out-of-touch policies. Over my career as a lawmaker at the local, state, and federal levels, I’ve had the privilege of working with incredible men and women in law enforcement who serve our country. They’ve told me that one-size-fits-all, simple-minded policies like these don’t work. They’ve told me these policies make our streets worse and put our kids at risk.

Sessions wants to return to policies that are dumb on crime. The research is clear – they don’t work. What’s more, these policies waste billions of taxpayers’ dollars, and they turn back progress made by red and blue states alike. When he was in Congress, then-Senator Sessions was out of step with many of his Republican colleagues who wanted to improve our criminal justice system. As Attorney General, he continues pushing the same old failed policies that will have devastating costs both to people’s lives and to our nation’s deficit.

I will continue to work with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to move forward on bipartisan criminal justice reform despite this shocking, backward announcement by the Administration.”
