Cárdenas Statement on California State of Emergency Declaration
WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Tony Cárdenas (CA-29) releases the following statement after Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency over the novel coronavirus:
“I fully support Governor Newsom declaring a state of emergency in California. It was the right thing to do. We need to make sure that state and local governments have all the resources they need to mitigate and prevent the spread of the coronavirus. I urge the public to remain calm and to continue going about their lives. I am continuing to monitor the situation and working with Congress and the White House to make sure that the administration has the appropriate funds to combat and contain the virus.”
On Wednesday, a California man died after falling ill with the virus while on a cruise ship. The virus has infected at least 210 people in the United States and 12 have died. Last night, the House of Representatives passed an $8 billion emergency funding package to help fight the coronavirus. The emergency package was approved by the Senate Thursday morning.
