Cárdenas Statement on LAUSD Fall Semester Announcement
SAN FERNANDO VALLEY – Congressman Tony Cárdenas (CA-29) released the following statement on the decision by the Los Angeles Unified School Districts (LAUSD) to continue online learning in the fall semester:
“After the first coronavirus surge in April, we did a great job flattening the curve in Los Angeles and California and our economy opened up. But too many people became complacent and forgot what must be done to stay safe and rebuild our economy. Mayor Garcetti and Governor Newsom have decided to temporarily shut down non-essential services due to the recent spike in COVID cases. This was not was not an easy decision, but it was the right decision. Leadership is not about doing what is easy, it’s about doing what is right. We all have a role to play to slow the spread of the virus so that LA and California can begin to reopen. It’s simple – we all need to wear a mask, wash our hands, and continue practicing social distancing.
“LAUSD’s decision to continue online learning in the fall semester is necessary at this time. It is a necessary step to keep our children and our educators safe. I am confident that LAUSD will do everything in their power to ensure that our students do not fall behind and that children who rely on school services are not forgotten.
“This is not the first time America has faced challenging times, but we always get through them. And I know that we will get through this one if we all do our parts.”
