Cárdenas: Trump has Reached a Whole New Level of Corruption
WASHINGTON, DC –Today, Congressman Tony Cárdenas (CA-29) releases the following statement after Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced the House would begin a formal impeachment inquiry of President Trump:
“This most recent saga of presidential misconduct between President Trump and the Ukrainian President Zelensky only reaffirms my position of opening a formal impeachment inquiry of Trump. Attempting to conspire with a foreign government and withholding congressionally approved military aid to coerce a foreign leader into investigating a political opponent in order to benefit his reelection campaign is dishonorable, unpatriotic, and potentially illegal. Trump has reached a whole new level of corruption.
“President Trump clearly has no respect for the rule of law. He has consistently ordered current and former officials to ignore congressional subpoenas and to act unlawfully. Trump and his administration have lied to Congress under oath, distorted the facts, and have obstructed investigations for nearly three years. Enough is enough. The American people deserve the truth.
“As Members of the United States House of Representatives, it is our duty to check this president. We cannot allow Trump to continue doing as he pleases like the dictators he so admires. We must use all the tools the Constitution provides to hold President Trump and his administration accountable.
“I applaud Speaker Pelosi for formally announcing an impeachment inquiry and fulfilling her constitutional obligation to check this president. This is about protecting our democracy and doing what is right for the American people. We will gather the facts. We will uncover the truth. We will hold Trump accountable.”
