Cárdenas, E&C Leaders Applaud CPSC Vote on Infant Sleep Safety Rule

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ), Consumer Protection and Commerce Subcommittee Chair Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) and Consumer Protection and Commerce Subcommittee Vice Chair Tony Cárdenas (D-CA) released the following joint statement today after the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) voted to finalize a new safety standard for infant sleep products:

“We commend the Consumer Product Safety Commission for finalizing a strong new safety standard on infant sleep products today.  This final rule will give parents and caregivers the peace of mind they deserve.  They will now know that products intended or marketed for babies are held to a national standard consistent with long-standing safe sleep best practices.  This important rule will keep dangerous infant sleep products that can confuse parents and put babies’ lives at risk off the market.”

In the 116th Congress, the Subcommittee on Consumer Protection and Commerce held a legislative hearing on keeping kids and consumers safe from dangerous products, including infant sleep products.  Among the bills discussed – and ultimately passed by the House – was H.R. 3172, the Safe Sleep Act for Babies Act of 2019, introduced by Rep. Cardenas.
