Cárdenas Highlights $4.25 Billion in New Funding for California Bridges from Bipartisan Infrastructure Law

SAN FERNANDO VALLEY— Today, Congressman Tony Cárdenas (CA-29) highlighted the first round of investments in repairs to bridges in California and the Northeast San Fernando Valley under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Law he helped pass. This is the single largest dedicated bridge investment since the construction of the interstate highway system, providing $4.25 billion to California.

There are currently 1,536 California bridges in poor condition. The Northeast San Fernando Valley has 232 bridges, mainly along the 405, 5, 210 and 118 freeways, including five in poor condition.

“Thanks to President Biden’s Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act that I voted to pass last year, we are delivering real results for our state and community,” said Congressman Cárdenas. “Bridges are critical to everyday life—helping us get to work, visit family and go to doctor’s appointments. Repairing our bridges and overpasses will make our community safer, grow our local economy and help us stay connected. I’m looking forward to working with the California Department of Transportation to ensure these funds help our Northeast San Fernando Valley community.”

The investment announced today is designed to help California repair local bridges that are critical for getting to school and work, moving commerce and connecting communities. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law also includes a separate program designed to support larger bridges through a competitive grant program. Details on that program will be announced at a later date.
