Cárdenas, Maloney Celebrate Smithsonian Site Selection for Latino, Women’s Museums
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Congressman Tony Cárdenas (CA-29) and Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney (NY-12) celebrated the Smithsonian Board of Regents’ statement in favor of designating the Tidal Basin and South Monument sites for the National Museum of the American Latino and the American Women’s History Museum. Both sites were recommended by the National Museum of the American Latino Board of Trustees and the American Women’s History Museum Advisory Council.
“As of today, we are one step closer to achieving the dream of a long-awaited Latino Museum and Women’s Museum,” said Congressman Cárdenas. “I am absolutely thrilled to see the Smithsonian Board of Regents has supported selecting the Tidal Basin and South Monument sites for both museums. The prominence of either of these locations will mean that millions visiting our nation’s capital will be able to experience – whether through exhibits, educational programming or cultural celebrations – how our stories are fundamental to the complete history of America. It will mean that our presence will be deeply embedded into our nation’s most significant symbol of democracy: the National Mall. I cannot wait to continue our work to design and construct a museum by us, for us and in our image.”

I am committed to supporting legislation to enable the Smithsonian to move full steam ahead toward construction on the South Monument and Tidal Basin sites. The new museums will be vital additions to the Smithsonian that will allow us to tell a more complete story that recognizes the remarkable contributions of women and Latinos who have helped shape our nation.”
The Tidal Basin site is approximately 5.25 acres and is located on Independence Avenue SW and Raoul Wallenberg SW. It overlooks the Tidal Basin and has views of the Jefferson and Washington Monuments. The South Monument site is approximately 1.4 acres and is located on Independence Avenue SW and 14 Street SW with views of the Washington Monument and the United States Capitol. Both locations are near each other and prominently sit on the National Mall.
