Cárdenas, Montague Charter Academy Honor First Responders of Recent Whiteman Airport Crash
SAN FERNANDO VALLEY — Today Congressman Tony Cárdenas (CA-29) joined students and faculty from Montague Charter Academy to honor the first responders who saved a pilot’s life at the January 9th Pacoima aircraft crash that occurred near Whiteman Airport. LAPD Sergeant Joseph Cavestany and LAPD Officers Robert Sherock, Damien Castro and Christopher Aboyte, received special certificates of recognition in honor of their heroism. The students of Montague Charter Academy also presented letters and sang America the Beautiful to the same officers who keep their school safe every day.
“There are real, homegrown heroes right here in our Pacoima community,” said Congressman Cárdenas. “When law enforcement officers put on their badge every morning, they don’t know what’s in store for them that day, but they do know they are willing to save a life if they have to. That’s exactly what happened earlier this month when LAPD Sergeant Joseph Cavestany and LAPD Officers Robert Sherock, Damien Castro and Christopher Aboyte saw a plane crash and jumped into action to save the pilot’s life. We thank God for heroes like these who work day in and day out to keep our community safe.”
“We are delighted to host a ceremony for our LAPD Heroes Sergeant Joseph Cavestany, Officers Robert Sherock, Damian Castro and Christopher Aboyte,” said Jose D. Salas, Executive Director and Principal at Montague Charter Academy. “Our fifth graders present today will have the unique opportunity to be up close with real heroes. We do not need to go outside of our Pacoima Community to find Heroes. No need to watch a Spiderman movie, attend a Dodger game or go to a concert for heroes when we have them right here Pacoima. Thank you officers for your outstanding work.”
