Cárdenas Statement on Padilla Appointment to U.S. Senate

SAN FERNANDO VALLEY, CA – Congressman Tony Cárdenas (CA-29) releases the following statement on Governor Gavin Newsom’s decision to appoint California Secretary of State Alex Padilla to succeed Vice President-elect Kamala Harris in the United States Senate:

“I am so incredibly proud of one of my closest and dearest friends, Alex Padilla, on being named the next U.S. Senator for the state of California. I’ve known Alex for over 25 years. A dedicated public servant of more than 20 years and a fierce advocate for working families, Alex has never forgotten his roots and has been an effective leader throughout his career. Someone who is constantly breaking barriers. Alex will be the first Latino to represent California in the U.S. Senate. Alex and I grew up two blocks away from each other, in a neighborhood where we were told we would not amount to anything. We came up in public service together. We served together on the LA City Council and we’ll serve together again in the U.S. Capitol.

“As Secretary of State, he’s worked tirelessly for all Californians and to protect the integrity of our election systems. I know he’ll bring that same dedication and generous spirit to the United States Senate. Looking forward to our continued work together.”
