Cárdenas Statement on Senate Vote to Acquit Trump
WASHINGTON, DC –Congressman Tony Cárdenas (D-CA-29) releases the following statement on the United States Senate vote to acquit former President Donald Trump:
“Today’s vote by Senate Republicans not to convict Donald Trump for orchestrating the attack on the Capitol was a dereliction of the Senate’s duty to uphold the rule of law and put country ahead of politics. Even with all the damning evidence that was presented before the Senate, Republicans refused to listen because they were too concerned about their political careers instead of the future and safety of America.
“But I will not spend another moment talking about their utter failure. Instead, I want to talk about those who give me hope and faith.
“To the House Managers, thank you for telling our story of that day. It was compelling, compassionate, and heart-wrenching. Congressman Jaime Raskin, who, on the heels of the passing of his son, did not waver in his commitment to defending our democracy and the Constitution. He saw the gravity of the situation and decided that what was at stake was bigger than one person and answered the call of duty. That is what an American patriot looks like.
“To the selfless heroes who protected us that day, like Eugene Goodman and the Capitol Police who were on the frontline – thank you. You kept us safe as Trump’s murderous mob stormed the Capitol to kill Members of Congress. In the face of metal rods and bear mace, you remained undeterred in protecting the citadel of our republic. We owe you an unpayable debt.
“To the Capitol staff, from congressional aides to the custodial employees who immediately swept the floors of glass from broken windows and were largely left to fend for themselves, I am in awe of your commitment, and your service to our nation will not go unnoticed. I thank you and I am here for you.
“Finally, to my colleagues who spoke the truth and voted for democracy, both Democrat and Republican, I stand with you. Our job as the people’s representatives has never been more important. Speaking the truth has never been more important. We must not be intimidated into submission. While many of you may face pressure to stay silent and bury the truth, history will look kindly on those who chose political expediency over the sanctity of security of America.”
