Cárdenas Statement on Smithsonian Naming First Director of Museum of the American Latino
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today Congressman Tony Cárdenas (CA-29), a Board of Trustee of National Museum of the American Latino, released the following statement on Jorge Zamanillo being named the first director of the new Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Latino:
“Congratulations to Jorge for being named the first-ever director of the Museum of the American Latino — what an incredible accomplishment,” said Congressman Cárdenas. “As the son of immigrants from Cuba, Jorge knows the immigrant and first-generation experiences that are at the heart of many Latino stories. That, combined with his decades of experience, will be key to delivering the beautiful narratives that are fundamental to the complete history of America. Whether you’re Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban or Salvadoran, you will find your story told at this museum. We have a lot of exciting work ahead of us, and with Jorge’s incredible talent and leadership, we are going to create a museum where millions visiting Washington D.C. will be able to live, breathe, feel and see how our Latino history is American history. I can’t wait to work alongside Jorge and my amazing fellow trustees to create one of the greatest museums this country will ever know.”
