Cárdenas Statement on Justice for George Floyd

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Former Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin was found guilty on all three counts in the death of George Floyd. Congressman Tony Cárdenas (CA-29) released the following statement:

“As a nation, we must constantly work to right every wrong, every day,” said Congressman Tony Cárdenas (CA-29).  “We need a system that delivers justice for people who have been denied justice for far too long. While true justice for George Floyd would mean that he is here with us today, the jury’s decision was clear, Guilty, Guilty, Guilty– the force Derek Chauvin used was murder, not policework. We have to hold accountable every person who has undermined our justice system and broken the people’s trust. Finally, a jury showed that there are consequences. With this verdict, the country has moved one step closer to a more just, and fair future.

“There is a lot of work to do. Every time excessive and deadly use of force by police is executed, we must have accountability until our systems value every human life equally.”

“I pray for George Floyd’s family. I pray for peace in our hearts. I pray for our country.”
