Dear Colleague:
The Congressional Hispanic Caucus is proud to endorse Congressman Tony Cárdenas for Chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC). Throughout his 24 years as a public servant and in various leadership roles, Tony Cárdenas has embodied the values of the Hispanic Caucus and made it his life’s mission to elevate issues important to our communities.
In order to successfully serve the people of America, our leadership must mirror our increasingly diverse constituency. Latinos comprise 18 percent of the American population and are a growing, critical group of the American electorate. That’s why we need leaders at the table who have shared experiences and possess the cultural competency to reach out to the various American communities. We need Hispanic voices and diverse leaders at the table. In addition, throughout his career in public service, Tony Cárdenas has illustrated that commitment to diversity countless times through the partnerships he has formed in various caucuses and the staff he has hired to help him execute his legislative agenda.
As a 24-year public servant, Tony Cárdenas has worked alongside his colleagues in the Congressional Hispanic Caucus to focus on issues that impact the Hispanic community and rectify longstanding inequities in our systems. Among his large breadth of work, he has fought to make our immigration system more fair and just, pushed for a National Latino Museum to tell our people’s stories, and increase access to healthcare services for everyone, regardless of immigration status.
Tony Cárdenas has consistently demonstrated his keen leadership abilities. As Chair of BOLD PAC for the past six years, he helped to increase the number of Hispanic members from 25 to nearly 40.? Additionally, he led the organization to support more than 150 non-Hispanic incumbents and candidates, people the Hispanic Caucus identified as allies in the fight to create more equitable and just policies for the Latino community. With Tony as Chair, we helped win elections for candidates across the ideological spectrum. BOLD PAC invested heavily and strategically and worked closely with the DCCC to ensure that our resources had the greatest impact. Tony empowered his colleagues to lead because he understood that the success of BOLD PAC, much like the DCCC, hinges on everyone contributing and doing their part. Tony will bring that kind of strategic thinking and collaborative spirit to the DCCC.
We know that 2022 will be a tough cycle for Democrats; we need Tony at the helm steering the DCCC to success. We saw the amazing success of the DCCC under the leadership of our fellow CHC colleague, Assistant Speaker Ben Ray Luján, who, like Tony, had previously chaired BOLD PAC and had experience leading a significant political operation. When Ben Ray was Chairman, we made historic gains and took the majority because we made smart investments, had a message that worked everywhere, and utilized the various Democratic talent available. Tony will build upon this success and continue to increase the diversity of staff, vendors, members, and candidates who participate in this process.
Tony Cárdenas has demonstrated the vision, commitment, and record that will be needed to win in the next cycle. He is committed to the idea that however much success is achieved we should never settle but instead continually strive to raise that bar higher. We know that if Tony is elected Chairman of the DCCC, he will bring us together in order to successfully maintain and expand our Democratic majority so that we can accomplish our priorities for the people. Therefore, we are proud to support Tony Cárdenas in his candidacy for Chair of the DCCC and are fully confident in his ability to be an effective leader in that role.
Sincerely,
Ruben Gallego
First Vice-Chair
