Cárdenas: It’s Time to Open an Impeachment Investigation into the President
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, U.S. Representative Tony Cárdenas (CA-29) has called on Congress to open an impeachment inquiry into President Trump.
Congressman Cárdenas releases the following statement:
“After carefully studying the Mueller report and watching how this President instructs current and former officials to ignore Congressional subpoenas and to act unlawfully, Congress has no choice but to open an impeachment inquiry into President Trump. The American people have witnessed the President’s consistent, flagrant disregard and disrespect for the rule of law. President Trump and his Administration have been lying to the American people and obstructing Congress for the past two and a half years. We deserve the truth.
“It is our duty as Members of the United States House of Representatives, the People’s House, to follow the facts and find the truth. We cannot allow Trump to continue to obstruct Congress’s investigation and prevent us from getting to the truth. We have come up against a wall. It’s time to break down that wall. We must use all the tools at our disposal and let the truth unfold before the eyes of the American people. We will work to gather the facts and hold this Administration accountable while still fulfilling our promise to the American people to improve healthcare, address our failing infrastructure, and build an economy that works for everyone.
“The framers of the Constitution put in place checks and balances so that power is not concentrated in one branch of government. To prevent us from realizing President George Washington’s fear of this country ‘degenerating into a monarchy.’ This President does not respect the separation of powers, the American people, our Constitution, Congress, or the rule of law. As a Member of Congress, I will not abdicate my constitutional obligation to check this President. This is not about party politics – it is about what is right for American people and our democracy. It is time to begin an impeachment inquiry into this President and get to the truth.”
