ICYMI: Cárdenas Presents $800,000 to Plaza Comunitaria Sinaloa at their Grand Opening to Expand Immigrant Catered Educational Programs and Implement Workforce Development Programs

SAN FERNANDO VALLEY – Today, Congressman Tony Cárdenas (CA-29) announced $800,000 in Community Project Funding to Plaza Comunitaria Sinaloato expand their educational programming and implement workforce development programs. They have coined this expansion and implementation as “The Community Empowerment Through Education Project”. The Community Empowerment Through Education project aims to provide access to adult basic education programs including Spanish Literacy, ESL, GED, Digital Literacy, and Citizenship Preparation. The project will also implement new workforce development programs in Small Business Entrepreneurship and Home Care Services as well as introduce a series of workshops that aim to benefit the community at large.

“I am honored to present Mrs. Garcia and Plaza Comunitaria Sinaloa a check for $800,000 federal dollars to expand their current educational programs and implement workforce development programs for low-income individuals. The type of work they do here hits home because my parents come from the same background as their students,” said Congressman Cárdenas. “My parents, who are from Temastían Jalisco, came to this country because there weren’t any formal schools in their town. They only reached a grade-school level education. Today, I am proud that organizations like this are helping people like my parents to not only give their children a formal education but also help parents continue their education.”

“I would like to express my deepest appreciation to our Congressman Tony Cárdenas for his presence today and for supporting our Community Empowerment Through Education project. I remember when you first visited us and said you were going to help us,” said Julieta Garcia, CEO of Plaza Comunitaria Sinaloa. “On behalf of all personnel, we would like you to accept our immense gratitude for listening to us and helping our community. Because of this, we respect and admire you greatly. Thank you for all of your support and for believing in our mission".

“Plaza Comunitaria Sinaloa is the type of organization we must ensure we elevate and support. Through education and workforce development programs, participants discover their goals and achieve stability for themselves and their families. Families that look just like mine, and who once also sought out these types of programs to succeed. Congratulations, Plaza Comunitaria Sinaloa, on the grand opening of your new space. And thank you, Congressman Cárdenas, for securing funding that recognizes the important role this organization plays in people’s lives and our community,” said Senator Menjivar.

“I remember when my late father, who was also an immigrant, asked me for guidance in programs in our community that could teach him English, and I felt so lost because I couldn’t find a single one. Today, I am proud that organizations like Plaza Comunitaria Sinaloa are in my district to help our Spanish-speaking community and people like my dad. Congratulations to Plaza Comunitaria Sinaloa on your grand opening. I am beyond excited to see the positive impact that this funding will continue to have on generations to come,” said Councilwomen Imelda Padilla.
