Cárdenas Announces $1 Million in Community Project Funding to Mid Valley Family YMCA for After School Programs

SAN FERNANDO VALLEY — Today, Congressman Tony Cárdenas (CA-29) announced $1 million in Community Project Funding to Mid Valley Family YMCA in Van Nuys for their Community Empowerment Learning Pods. The federal funding will help increase access to education for 10,000 low-income students through online and in-person tutoring.

“Today I delivered $1 million to Mid Valley YMCA in Van Nuys for after-school programs. Our friends at the Y already change lives every day, and this funding will only help them continue their work to help our kids succeed,” said Congressman Cárdenas.

This project will increase equitable access to LAUSD online schooling and to online and in-person tutoring support for lower-income youth. In total, the project will reach at least 10,000 students in learning recovery and their families through the Community Empowerment Hub model, which includes food insecurity supports necessary for academic and life success.

For the first time since 2009, Congress passed Community Project Funding, money requested by Members of Congress to meet the needs of their district. Congressman Cárdenas submitted ten Community Project Funding requests to the Appropriations Committee, all of which were passed in the Fiscal Year 2022 appropriations federal funding package. The over $12 million going to the Northeast San Fernando Valley will support community improvement, housing for the homeless, job training, youth programs, mental health services and more.
