Cárdenas Announces $450,000 in Community Project Funding to the Boys and Girls Club of San Fernando for After School Programs

The federal Community Project Funding will go towards STEM opportunities for students

SAN FERNANDO VALLEY — Today, Congressman Tony Cárdenas (CA-29) announced $450,000 in Community Project Funding for after-school programs at the Boys and Girls Club of San Fernando. The funding will create STEM opportunities for low-income and students of color through Social and Emotional Learning, an evidence-based approach needed to ensure students move forward in their academic or technical career pathways.

“My first job was at the Boys and Girls Club of the San Fernando Valley,” said Congressman Cárdenas. “Now, I'm honored to deliver $1 million in Community Project Funding to help kids from our community get into STEM and empower them to be future mathematicians, astronauts and so much more!”

The project delivers a two-pronged approach to address the needs of underserved youth in California’s 29th Congressional District. The first is through STEM opportunities for underrepresented students such as minorities, girls and youth from families living at or below the poverty line. Second, the project delivers social and emotional learning through evidence-based programs which are needed to ensure students move forward in their academic or technical career pathways.

For the first time since 2009, Congress passed Community Project Funding, money requested by Members of Congress to meet the needs of their district. Congressman Cárdenas submitted ten Community Project Funding requests to the Appropriations Committee, all of which were passed in the Fiscal Year 2022 appropriations federal funding package. The over $12 million going to the Northeast San Fernando Valley will support community improvement, housing for the homeless, job training, youth programs, mental health services and more.
