Cárdenas Presents Over $3 Million to San Fernando Gardens to Improve Living Conditions Impacted by Climate Change

Today,?Congressman Tony Cárdenas (CA-29)?visited the San Fernando Gardens to present?$3,573,240 in Community Project Funding?for the installation of energy-efficient air conditioning units and cool roofs. The San Fernando Gardens is deeply rooted in the San Fernando Valley dating back to the early 1950s and was originally built to provide affordable housing for returning veterans and low-income families. The funding for this project aims to improve the quality of life for residents in historically significant housing projects.

“I’m thrilled to bring back over $3 million in funds to Northeast San Fernando Valley as part of our continuous effort to combat climate change and save lives in the process,” said Congressman Cárdenas.?“These funds will be directly felt by my constituents as they will be used to install energy-efficient air conditioning units and cool roofs, ensuring that the residents of San Fernando Gardens have access to a more comfortable and sustainable living environment. This is not just an investment in infrastructure; it’s an investment in the health, well-being, and future of this community.”

“Of the 1,441 residents calling San Fernando Gardens home, almost 20% are seniors or infants,” said Jenny Scanlin, Chief Strategic Development Officer at HACLA. “Congressman Cardenas' advocacy to bring $3.5 million in federal funding for the installation of energy-efficient air conditioning and cool roofs is more than helpful; it is potentially life saving.”

“I commend Congressman Cardenas for securing over $3.5 Million for the San Fernando Gardens Housing Development in Pacoima. This is a critical milestone to ensure that the San Fernando Gardens Housing Development residents have access to energy-efficient air conditioning in their homes. Extreme heat events are dangerous for children, seniors, and those with preexisting medical conditions. Mitigating the effects of extreme heat has been a top focus of the Congressmember, myself, and our local partners to keep our community members protected and cool during heatwaves,” stated Assemblywoman Luz Rivas (D – San Fernando).

“With the severe heat the San Fernando Valley experiences, these resources will provide much needed relief to our families at the San Fernando Gardens. I thank Congressman Cárdenas for securing these essential funds,” said Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez.

For the second time since 2009, Congress passed Community Project Funding for FY23, money requested by Members of Congress to meet the needs of their district. Congressman Cárdenas submitted?15 requests?to the Appropriations Committee, all of which were passed in the Fiscal Year 2023 appropriations federal funding package. The?over $26 million?going to the Northeast San Fernando Valley is already supporting job creation, youth programs, mental health care, community empowerment, improvements to healthcare, and more.
