ICYMI: Cárdenas Delivers $12.5 Million in Federal Community Project Funding for San Fernando Valley Community in Check Presentation Tour

SAN FERNANDO VALLEY — Congressman Tony Cárdenas (CA-29) has delivered $12.5 million in federal Community Project Funding to the Northeast San Fernando Valley to support community improvement, housing for the homeless, job training, youth programs, mental health services and more. Over the last several weeks, Congressman Cárdenas has held check presentations for each community project. 

“When I came to Congress, I made a promise to take care of and fight for my community and bring back federal dollars to the San Fernando Valley,” said Congressman Cárdenas. “That’s why I’m proud to have delivered $12.5 million in federal funding for Valley community projects — money that is making a real, direct impact on the lives of our friends and neighbors. I will never stop advocating on behalf of our community.”

Below is a list of check presentations hosted by Congressman Cárdenas. 

  • $5,000,000 for the Telfair Avenue Multi-Modal Bridge Project over the Pacoima Wash
    • Congressman Cárdenas presented a $5 million check to the Office of Los Angeles City Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez to build a new pedestrian and bicycle bridge to provide safe and direct access to the future El Dorado Park. Currently, local students and neighborhood residents use a dangerous cut-through route that has caused numerous tragedies, including the most recent death of 14-year-old Elias Rodriguez. 
  • $800,000 to Pacoima Beautiful for the Pacoima Wash Greenway Project
    • Congressman Cárdenas presented an $800,000 check to Pacoima Beautiful to support the first phase of the Pacoima Wash Vision Plan that goes from the 5 freeway to Haddon Street, eventually extending to San Fernando Road. The funding will support the creation of a multipurpose park and green space that will help create a healthier, more sustainable community. 
  • $1,000,000 to Mid Valley YMCA for After School Programs
    • Congressman Cárdenas presented a $1 million check to Mid Valley Family YMCA in Van Nuys for their Community Empowerment Learning Pods. The federal funding will help increase access to education for 10,000 low-income students through online and in-person tutoring. 
  • $3,000,000 to LA Family Housing for Project Home Key Development
    • Congressman Cárdenas presented a $3 million check to LA Family Housing for their Project Homekey Development. The federal funding will convert the Panorama Inn into The Pano, permanent supportive housing (PSH) for individuals experiencing homelessness in the San Fernando Valley. Additionally, The Pano will provide supportive services designed to build independent living and connect people with community-based healthcare, treatment and employment services. The combination of housing and supportive services will help individuals break the cycle of homelessness. 
  • $400,000 to Los Angeles Valley College and Los Angeles Mission College for the Workforce Training Program
    • Congressman Cárdenas presented a $400,000 check to expand workforce development and biotech programs at Los Angeles Valley College (LAVC) and Los Angeles Mission College (LAMC). The Workforce Training Program offers short-term, vocational training to non-traditional students, who are unemployed, underemployed or displaced due to the pandemic. The program will train students to enter the workforce with a living wage.
  • $450,000 to the Boys & Girls Club of the San Fernando Valley for After School Programs
    • Congressman Cárdenas presented a $450,000 check for after-school programs at the Boys and Girls Club of the San Fernando Valley. The funding will create STEM opportunities for low-income and students of color through Social and Emotional Learning, an evidence-based approach needed to ensure students move forward in their academic or technical career pathways. 
  • $300,000 to Proyecto Del Barrio for the On-Work-site-Experience Program
    • Congressman Cárdenas presented a $300,000 check for job training programs at El Proyecto del Barrio. The funding will create an intensive training program to serve under-skilled job seekers. The individuals will develop hands-on work experience in community clean-up, debris removal and related projects tied to community involvement.
